Five decades of disciplined inquiry into accounting, finance, banking, and the science of business — shaping practitioners, scholars, and leaders since 1970.
The Post Graduate Department of Commerce is one of the oldest departments of the College, with the under-graduate programme in Commerce inaugurated on July 19, 1970 with sixty students, five faculty members, and Prof. R. C. Kaushal as the founding Head. Following his superannuation, the department was led successively by Prof. SPS Yadav and Prof. RS Chhiller — each shaping its character.
Responding to the growing demand for the discipline, the Master of Commerce programme was introduced in 2004, and the Bachelor of Business Administration was added in 2021–22 to serve students drawn to management. Today, under the headship of Dr Tejinder Singh Brar, the department supports more than 1,000 students, mentored by 24 faculty members — twenty of whom hold doctoral degrees with specialisations spanning accounting, finance, law, economics and management.
Beyond its core programmes, the department offers Honours in Accounting & Finance and Economics, alongside add-on courses in e-Commerce and e-Banking. A recently introduced Certified Course in Tally, in collaboration with Tally Education Pvt. Ltd., prepares students for employment in accounts, audit, and taxation — the architecture of modern enterprise.
