NSS Volunteer Sandeep Kumar (2011-12) and Rahul Rajrana (2017-18) received the prestigious Indira Gandhi NSS Award. Rahul was honoured by the Hon'ble President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, at Rashtrapati Bhawan on September 24, 2019.
The College was awarded a Certificate of Commendation and a Trophy of Honour by the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee on July 17, 2021, for its contribution to the Action for Clean & Green Chandigarh campaign.
On Blood Donor Day, June 14, 2022, Programme Officer Dr. Rohit Sharma and two volunteers received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Department of Transfusion Medicine, GMCH Sec 32, Chandigarh, for regularly organising blood donation camps.
From regular community drives to the seven-day Special NSS Camp, here is a glimpse of our volunteer service across the year.
An online campaign was started on May 31, 2021 in which 90 NSS volunteers participated to discourage people from tobacco consumption.

On June 5, 2021, the NSS Unit started an online campaign in which 90 NSS volunteers participated in the plantation drive.

The NSS Unit conducted a Yoga week from June 15–21, 2021, concluding on International Yoga Day with the session "Be With Yoga, Be at Home" by Yoga Expert Mr. Sudhir Arya from Patanjali Yoga Samiti, Chandigarh West. 49 NSS volunteers participated in the online session, while others attended via live streaming on the NSS YouTube Channel.

On July 11, 2021, the NSS Unit organised an online Inter-College Slogan Writing Competition on the theme "Control Population — Empower People — Develop Nation". The winners — Mr. Sahil, Esha and Tanish Bansal — were awarded prizes.

Five volunteers — Dilpreet, Tanish Bansal, Garima, Ankit Garg and Palakdeep Singh — successfully completed the 10-day online workshop organised by the Department of Youth Welfare, Panjab University, from August 2–11, 2021. They received training in communication skills, life education, leadership, personality development and stress management.

Volunteers Dilpreet Kaur and Ram Singh attended the four-day course from September 14–17, 2021, conducted by Mr. Amrinder Singh, Lecturer in First Aid and Official in Fire and Rescue Services, Chandigarh. The course was organised by SGGS College in collaboration with the Red Cross Society, Chandigarh.

42 NSS volunteers, under the supervision of Programme Officers, started a door-to-door dengue awareness drive in Indira Colony, Chandigarh from October 21–26, 2021.


From December 13–15, 2021, the NSS Unit organised a series of activities including a Declamation Contest, Quiz Competition and Pledge to Vote, to spread awareness about the importance of casting one's vote. Winners advanced to a state-level contest at PGGCG, Sec-42, Chandigarh on December 18, 2021. Mr. Aditya Rampal (BA II) and Kartike Shukla (BA I) bagged the first prize in the inter-college contest.

14 NSS volunteers under the supervision of Programme Officer Dr. Rohit Sharma visited Govt. College of Art, Sec-10, Chandigarh to donate blood at the camp organised by Command Hospital (WC), Chandi Mandir on March 11, 2022.

The NSS Unit, in collaboration with NCC Naval Wing, Rotaract Club and Mehramat Society of SGGS College, organised a blood donation camp on April 11, 2022. An expert team from the Department of Transfusion Medicine, PGIMER Chandigarh, collected 125 units of blood contributed by 85 students and faculty members.

Mr. Rohit Kumar, Social Activist and Founder of the Swarmani Youth Welfare Association, Chandigarh, delivered a lecture as a National Awardee NSS Volunteer himself. He inspired the young volunteers, telling how working as an NSS volunteer can take one higher in life. The second guest speaker, Mohd. Amzad, spoke about his recent social work as an NSS volunteer that brought him a National Award.

Dr. Suresh Kumar Arya (Prof. and Head, Cornea, Eye Bank and Refractive Surgery, Dept. of Ophthalmology, GMCH Sec 32) broke many myths related to eye donation. Mr. Jagannath Singh Jayara, Principal of the Institute for the Blind, Sec 26, Chandigarh, also spoke to make volunteers realise the significance of this noble act for blind people.

Ms. Amandeep Kaur (Scientist B, Hydrogeologist, Central Ground Water Board, NWR, Chandigarh) delivered a lecture on "Components and Design of Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting". After lunch, volunteers walked about 1 km from the college campus to visit the Le Corbusier Museum, Sec 19 — stressing the importance of walking and learning how the city beautiful came into existence.


Dr. Arun Bansal (Senior Programmer, Finance Department, PU Chandigarh) delivered "Natural Biodiversity: How to Contribute Sustainably". A trail in the Guru Nanak Sacred Forest was organised, where members Dr. Inderpal Parsicha, Dr. Mandeep Kaur Dhami and Dr. Meena Jindal spoke about the unique forest. Dr. Amrinder Singh spoke briefly about the birds found there. A photography session was conducted and prizes given for the best photos.


Eminent panellists included Smt. Vibhu Raj (IPS, ADGP, Vigilance Bureau, Punjab — Chief Guest); Dr. Rachna Singh (IRS, Former Principal Commissioner, Income Tax, New Delhi); Ms. Prabhjot Kaur (Former Principal, Gurmat College, Patiala); Dr. Anju Suri (Dean College Development Council, PU Chandigarh); and Ms. Gagandeep Kaur (Co-Chairperson, Women Entrepreneur Cell). All aspects of gender equality — social, political, economic, cultural and historical — were covered.

Mr. Hardeep (Video Journalist, Scroll, Punjab News Channel — SGGS alumnus) traced the history of Bhangra and taught its skills to volunteers. The Theatre session was graced by Mr. Amolak, Ms. Anita Shabdeesh, Mrs. Raj Dhaliwal and Mr. Nirbhai Dhaliwal. Volunteers then proceeded to Kaimbwala Village, met Smt. Jaswinder Kaur (Councillor, Ward 1), took a rally on the Swachh Bharat & Jal Shakti themes, and staged a nukkad natak on water wastage.


Welcome address by Programme Officer Dr. Rohit Sharma. Chief Guest Mr. Devender Singh Chauhan (Range Forest Officer, Dept. of Forests & Wildlife, UT Administration, Chandigarh) shared stories of his rare adventures in Trans Himalayan areas and his work in Lahaul Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh. The event ended with cultural performances by volunteers and a Vote of Thanks by Programme Officer Dr. Anupama Vashisht.

Volunteers attending the Seven-Day Special NSS Camp and other regular activities are awarded certificates carrying benefits for seeking admission to higher academic programmes and jobs.
Throughout every academic session, the NSS Unit celebrates the following days in full letter and spirit.
