The Prof. Puran Singh Science Society is one of the best platforms for science students of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College to realise their scientific skills and knowledge, and fulfil their quest for hands-on science. From inauguration to a calendar of celebrations

In its first year, the Society anchored a series of marquee events — beginning with its inauguration and extending through expert lectures, the National Science Day celebration, an inter-college quiz, and the Akshay Urja Diwas observance.

Inauguration of the Society

The Society is named after Prof. Puran Singh — an eminent scholar, poet and scientist of 19th-century India. On the inaugural occasion, a book section dedicated to Prof. Puran Singh's work was launched in the Bhai Kahan Singh Library of SGGS College. A Science Wall with graffiti depicting the amalgamation of different fields of science was inaugurated, and a Wall Magazine was launched for portraying the writings of the College's science students.

Expert Lecture on Prof. Puran Singh

An online lecture was organised on 17 February 2022 to acknowledge the work and philosophy of Prof. Puran Singh, and to acquaint students and faculty with his life and work.

The resource person was Prof. Hardev Singh Virk. The audience heard a detailed lecture and learned about the illustrious life of Prof. Puran Singh — a great visionary, pioneer scientist and poet — and his scientific and literary contributions.

National Science Day 2022

Celebrated to mark the discovery of the Raman effect by Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman, on the theme "Integrated Approach in S&T for Sustainable Future". The chief guest, Prof. Arvind, Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala, addressed the students and encouraged them to enrich their scientific knowledge and participate in Science Society activities.

A day of competitions, lectures & recognition

The Day witnessed a profusion of competitions — Essay Writing, Project Exhibition, Best Out of Waste, Rangoli Making, and Poster Making. About 28 essays on the topic "History of Science in Punjab" were received from students of various science departments. Around 40 students participated in Rangoli making on the theme "Save Forests".

Overall, around 157 students from across the science departments participated enthusiastically in the day's events. The event concluded with the felicitation of winners of the various competitions with trophies, and certificates were given to all the participants.

Inter-College Quiz Competition

The Prof. Puran Singh Science Society and the Innovation Cell of the College jointly organised an inter-college quiz competition on 09 June 2022, on the theme "Women Scientists of India and their Innovations". The event was organised to sensitise students about the role of Indian women in the field of science.

Five teams from four colleges participated. Arman Kundu and Shweta Garg from SGGS College, Sector-26, won the first prize, and Shivansh Sharma and Abhishek Shandil from DAV College, Sector-10, won the second prize. The event highlighted the achievements of women scientists and innovators across different fields of science.

Akshay Urja Diwas 2022

A celebration of renewable energy — sponsored by the Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society (CREST), Chandigarh — jointly organised by the Prof. Puran Singh Science Society, the Dharat Suhavi Environment Society, and the Innovation Cell of the College.

Expert Lecture on the theme "Impact of Akshay Urja in India", sensitising students about renewable energy resources and their importance.

Magazine Release — the College magazine Agammi Jyot, 2021–22, on the theme of environmental sustainability, was released on this occasion.

Student Competitions — Slogan Writing, Poster Making, PowerPoint Presentation, and Poetry Recitation, with active participation across departments.

Three Bodies, One Cause — co-hosted by the Science Society, Dharat Suhavi Environment Society and the Innovation Cell.

Membership

Open to every science student of SGGS

Membership is open to all students enrolled in the College's science departments. Office bearers are nominated each year from across departments under the guidance of a faculty advisor, who serves as the convener and shapes the annual calendar of activities in consultation with student leaders.
