Sharing the Space

Rules & regulations of the Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Library

The library is a shared resource, and a clear set of rules helps every reader make the most of it. Members are expected to know and follow these rules at all times.

Note: The Library Rules and Regulations shall be modified from time to time and shall be binding on all concerned. The Library Notice on Library Rules and Regulations may be consulted for further and detailed information.

Working Hours

Timings

  • Monday to Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The Bhai Kahan Singh Nabha Library functions on all working days except National Holidays and holidays declared by Panjab University.

Library Membership

  • Students desirous of availing library facility shall apply to the Librarian in the prescribed form obtainable from the library. After the process, the Librarian shall issue as many Reader's Tickets as the number of books the student is entitled to borrow.
  • Faculty members are issued library passbooks upon receiving intimation of their appointment from the College Establishment Branch.
  • The Librarian at her discretion may allow other individuals to make casual use of the library.

Member Privileges

The number of books that may be issued to different categories of members is as follows:

*Teachers who have been granted UGC major projects are entitled to get issued the number of books purchased under the scheme, with the undertaking of returning such books after completion of the project. Project Fellows will get the books issued in the name of the Principal Investigator only.

Loan Privileges

  • 2 books to undergraduate and 4 books to honours / postgraduate students are issued for a period of 14 days with an overdue charge of Rs. 1/- per book per day if kept beyond 14 days.
  • 15 books to teaching staff and 5 books to non-teaching staff are issued for a period of 30 days.
  • At the time of borrowing a book, the borrower shall deposit the Reader's Ticket against which the books shall be issued. The Reader's Ticket will be returned to the borrower when the book is returned to the library.
  • If lost, a duplicate Reader's Ticket will be issued on payment of Rs. 50/-.
  • Books once issued should not be brought inside, unless to be returned.
  • Reference books, text books, rare books, periodicals, CD-ROM databases and other documents are placed in the restricted category and are not to be lent.
  • The Librarian may recall any book(s) from the borrower at any time after issue.

Library Card

A student is issued a smart Library-cum-Identity card, bearing his/her photo, name, roll number, class and signature, which he/she has to carry at all times. If lost, a new card will be issued on payment of Rs. 100/-.

No Dues Certificate

Before the commencement of annual exams, or before a student leaves college / migrates, he/she will have to obtain a 'No Dues Certificate' from the library.

Replacement of Lost or Damaged Library Books

  • Members of the library are responsible for any damage caused to the books or other property belonging to the library and shall be required to pay the penalty imposed.
  • Members leaving the library should get the material borrowed or taken out of the library checked by the library staff member deputed on the gate.
  • Upon any infringement of the library rules, the privileges of membership of the library will be forfeited.
  • A borrower shall replace a book if it is lost while in his/her custody, as per library rules.
  • In case the borrower fails to replace a lost or damaged book, the loss will be met by a penalty as per library rules.
  • A person losing or damaging library books repeatedly shall be debarred from using the library.

Restricted Library Collection

The following materials are placed in the restricted category and are for in-library consultation only:

  • Reference Books
  • Rare Books
  • Journals and Magazines, etc.

General Rules

  • Users are not allowed to bring their personal belongings into the library. All members are required to leave their personal belongings (books, files, briefcases, handbags, registers, etc.) at the entrance of the library (Property Counter).
  • Users are not allowed to write, underline or mark the library books. Library books are carefully examined on return and the borrower will be held responsible for defacing, damaging or loss of library book(s) in his/her possession. This may deprive a member of his/her privileges.
  • Users are requested to leave the book(s) on the reading table, which will be kept by the library staff on the exact place according to Call Number(s).
  • Complete silence should be observed inside the library, except for brief and subdued talk with the library staff at the Circulation Desk or in any other section of the library.
  • Beverages and eatables are not allowed in the library.
  • Use of mobile phones is strictly prohibited inside the library. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in a fine and/or exclusion from the library.
  • Sleeping, unnecessary discussions, loud voices, disturbance, feet on tables and chairs, and unbalanced talk with colleagues are not allowed in the library.
  • Members may give suggestions on the acquisition of books, journals, etc. and on the all-round improvement of the library.
Misuse — Wilful misuse of library facilities, mutilation of books or repeated breach of rules may invite suspension of borrowing privileges and disciplinary action under the College's general code of conduct.
