Sections of the Library

Library Sections Overview
Inside the Library

A library organised for every kind of reader

The library is divided into clearly defined functional sections — from circulation and periodicals to a digital corner and stack area — each designed to support a specific type of reading, study or research activity.

Circulation Section
Section 01

Circulation Section

The circulation section, being a public service point, has been established near the main entrance on the Ground Floor of the library. This section provides smart library cards to all the bonafide students of the College through which the students are able to avail the library services. It facilitates lending services and facilities for return of loaned items as per the prescribed rules.

This section performs various functions, viz., registration of new members, lending of books, reminders for overdue books, renewal of membership cards, records and files, statistics and inter-library loans etc. The books are issued with the help of a Barcode Scanner.

The Browne Charging System has been adopted and the students are provided with the ticket system for issue of books. For the staff and faculty members, the Newark Charging System has been adopted under which they are provided with passbooks. Since July 2005 most of these functions are done on computers in addition to being done manually.

Periodicals Section
Section 02

Periodicals Section

The Periodicals Section houses multi-faculty journals, knowledge-based and general magazines, and newspapers in various languages. This section provides up-to-date research information and recreational material to the end users.

The college library subscribes to the following on a regular basis:

41
Journals
20
Magazines
16
Dailies
340
Bound Volumes

Older periodicals undergo binding for archiving and preservation, and are then placed on shelves and made available in the reading rooms for researchers. A newspaper clipping file is also prepared and maintained, covering college achievements, admissions, vacancies, sports laurels and similar items. Current issues of journals and magazines are displayed on the pigeon rack.

Digital Corner
Section 03

Digital Corner

To keep rhythm with the latest Information and Communication Technology, a Digital Corner has been established in the main library. The Digital Corner is equipped with the latest configured computer systems along with internet facility for our esteemed faculty. College students can also avail the internet facility through Wi-Fi.

This section also maintains a considerable number of CDs and DVDs of e-books for the end users. Users can also access the DELNET and N-LIST databases, e-journals and other open-access resources from this section.

Working & Support Sections

Behind the scenes

Sections that quietly keep the library running — from technical processing of new arrivals to binding, stacking and the property counter at the gate.

Technical Section

The Technical Processing Section bridges acquisition and circulation. Located in the basement, it is responsible for receiving, processing and labeling library materials, and for maintaining the Open Public Access Catalogue (OPAC).

Major activities include: classification of books following DDC 22nd edition; cataloguing in SLIM21 software; database preparation and updates; barcode generation; stamping and labeling; and weekly display and dispatch of new arrivals.

Stack Area

Located in the basement, the well-stocked stack area houses books across various disciplines. It is open-ended and versatile to hold incoming information, and is updated on a regular basis. A special area has been designated for stacking books related to Post Graduate Courses.

Binding Section

The binding section is functional in the basement of the library. The book binder repairs damaged books as and when needed. Old journal issues are also bound here and then placed in a separate section as Bound Volumes of Journals.

Reading Area

A dedicated reading area with a seating capacity of approximately 52 readers is provided within the library, suitable for focused study and reference work.

Property Counter

A Property Counter Rack is placed at the entrance of the library, where end users keep their personal belongings such as bags before entering. To ensure the safety of library books, a Gate Check System has been adopted, subjecting users to a proper check before leaving the library.
